Arghh! I'm confused. Last night Labour won their battle to allow for 42 days detention without charge. This, along with many other Labour laws and policies makes a mockery of our democracy, our freedom and our civil liberties.
This morning, rumours started about David Davis (shadow home secretary) fighting with David Cameron (opposition leader). Then, we heard that he'd resigned as MP in order to force a by-election. On civil liberties. He wants to turn this into a mini-referendum on Civil Liberties. And this would not be a media-described "referendum on Gordon Brown". This would be a candidate run referendum on civil liberties, and that makes it a whole lot more significant.
Unfortunately, it's only over a limited area. On a very important national issue, only the people of Davis' constituency are able to vote on it. What do you think? I hope that some organisation will try and organise some national stuff around this. And I hope that it isn't SWP. They cannot be allowed to hijack this and kill it. A grassroots civil liberties campaigning group? Liberty? anyone?
And I'm also stuck with admiring a Tory Politician. This isn't the first time though - I also admired John Bercow when he helped lead the cross bench Section 28 repeal. I disagree with the Tories on the vast majority of the platform. I suspect that most of their opposition to civil liberties erosion is opposition for oppositions sake and they wouldn't do much different in power. But David Davies has actually shown himself to have beliefs and principals I support.
